Ecolonical LAB is an independent research lab working at the nexus of water, energy, biodiversity, urban and territorial systems, and ethical data and AI. Combining data science, machine learning, and deep learning with qualitative and social-science methods, the lab investigates when and how technology-enabled interventions should be used in environmental and territorial contexts. Ecolonical LAB specializes in AI safety and governance, developing frameworks for safe and accountable AI, conducting risk assessments and algorithmic audits, and informing AI policy. It produces research reports, articles, talks, and a podcast that critically examine environmental data infrastructures, biodiversity monitoring, citizen science, and the ethics and politics of open data.
